Fresh From Outside

Sometimes it's good to just get outside and have an adventure! So, I take my paints, easel, and wagon and go find a place to paint!

Painting outdoors is called "painting en plein air". Painting from life outside is a fun challenge because the light changes throughout the day and the weather can also change. This affects the colors that I see and so I must decide whether I will stick with the colors I remember seeing earlier in the day or choose to add some new highlights I see later if it will make the painting better.

These plein air paintings are usually smaller since I need to get them done quickly and pack them up again. I like to use 11x14 inch panels most of the time, so if you are interested in a small painting for yourself or for a friend you are in for a treat with these special pieces!

While designing them I try to describe the best part of that place in the painting and the feeling of being there. So, check out these little paintings and see what's Fresh From Outside!

Just after sunrise at Cannon Beach, Oregon. The mist starts to clear away while the sunlight reveals the warm colors on the great rocks standing out in the sea.
